The Orthodox Church challenges us to shift our understanding of failure (sin) from a legal model to a medical one. Holy Tradition diagnoses sin as a profound internal disorder or spiritual sickness, rather than simple rule-breaking. The Orthodox Church is seen as a “spiritual hospital” designed for therapeutic restoration, where Christ is the Chief Physician. Healing requires synergy—divine grace combined with the patient’s intentional effort and “remedial self-mastery”. Sacraments, like Penance and Unction, deliver this grace, aiming for the restoration of the whole person.
